Maha mela
Maha Mela (exhibition cum sale of products by women entrepreneurs) was organized on 08.12.2011 and 09.12.2011. Dr. T.S.K.Meenakshisundaram, Chancellor, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women inaugurated the Maha Mela. Dr.Sheela Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore, greeted the women entrepreneurs. Mrs.D.Sumathi, Branch Manager, Micro SATE, Indian Bank, Coimbatore delivered the special address. Dr.Gowri Ramakrishnan, Registrar, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women received the first sale. Sixty stalls were put up by the budding women entrepreneurs wherein items such as handicrafts, readymade garments, artificial jewellery, fancy items etc were displayed. The women reported that they had incurred a profit of Rs. 1000 to 1500 per day. The staff and the students were encouraged to patronize the respective stalls put up by the entrepreneurs.
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day was celebrated on 08.03.2011 in collaboration with the Department of Home Science Extension Education. Dr.K.Thangamani, Professor and Head, Department of Home Science Extension Education delivered welcome address. Dr.Sheela Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Avinashilingam Deemed University for Women, Coimbatore presided over the function.Dr.Thenmozhi Neethirajan, Gynaecologist, Kurinji Hospital. Coimbatore delivered the special address on importance of “Women and Health”
During the celebrations four women achievers were from various fields such as Mrs. T.R.Rajeshwari, Visually Impaired Music Teacher, Government Higher Secondary School, Kalapatti, Mrs.Chitra, SHG Coordinator, Sri Avinashilingam Education Trust Institutions, Mrs.Y.Stella, Urban Health Nurse, Meenakshi Maternity Home and Mrs.Sakunthala, Women Entrepreneur, Surya Tex, Coimbatore.were honoured by Dr.Thenmozhi Neethirajan. Dr.Sheela Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, Avinashilingam Deemed University distributed the prizes for the Winners of the competitions conducted for the SHG women. These competitions were organized by the Gandhian Studies Centre, Avinashilingam Deemed University for Women.
Dr.K.C.Leelavathy, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies proposed vote of thanks. Faculty of Home Science, Faculty of Humanities students and SHG women from Coimbatore district were the participants for this function.
National Integration week celebration
The National Integration Week is observed from November 19-25 every year to foster and re-inforce the spirit of communal harmony, national integration and pride in India's vibrant composite culture and nationhood. The occasion provides an opportunity to reaffirm age old traditions and faith in the values of tolerance, co-existence and brotherhood in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society. The week would begin with National Integration Pledge. National integration, welfare of minorities, linguistic harmony, weaker sections, cultural unity, women's issues and conservation are the themes for the Week.
The observation of the National Integration Week would also help to highlight the inherent strength and resilience of the nation to withstand actual, and potential threats to the eclectic and secular fabric of our country, and nurture a spirit of communal harmony in its widest sense.
Centre for Women’s studies in Collaboration with the Department of Home Science Extension and Mahalir Thittam celebrated the National Integration week. A special programme was organized on 23.11.2009, wherein Dr.Saroja Prabhakaran, Vice Chancellor, Avinashilingam University for Women delivered the presidential address and National Integration week fledge. Thiru.P.Sundaram, Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam and Dr.G.Krishnabai, Dean, Faculty of Home Science, Avinashilingam University for Women Greeted the participants. Special lectures on “Role of Women in national Integration” and “Role of Women in Environmental Management” were given by Dr.Sathyavathi Muthu Professor and Head, Department of Resource Management and Dr.R.Alamelu, Professor, Department of Home Science Extension respectively.
Celebration of International Women’s Day
International Women's Day (IWD) is marked on the 8th of March every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for action, the outcome of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. The Beijing Platform – the most comprehensive global policy framework to achieve the goals of gender equality, development and peace – called for action on 12 key issues: Poverty | education and training | health | violence against women |armed conflict | economy | power and decision-making |institutional mechanisms | human rights | media | environment | girls.
In recognition of this important anniversary, March 8th 2010 is observed as the 100th Annivarsary of International Women’s Day, the theme of this year’s celebration is "Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All”
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Centre for Women’s Studies in Collaboration with the Department of Home Science Extension and Community and Social Service organized a Special Lecture wherein Dr.Saroja Prabhakaran, Vice Chancellor, Avinashilingam University for Women presided and delivered a lecture on “Women in Community Service”
Various Competitions namely essay, poster and slogan writing competitions on the theme Equal Rights for Women was organized for the University students. Around 400 students participated in these competitions. The cash prizes for the winners of the competition was distributed by Dr.G.Krishnabai, Dean, Faculty of Home Science, Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore.
Tiruppur Rathinasamy Samiammal Endowment Lecture
In collaboration with the Dept. of Home Science Extension, Tiruppur Rathinaswamy Endowment Lecture was organized on 30.03.2010. Dr Ulaganayaki Palani, Profesoor and Head, Department of Tamil, Stella Maris College, Chennai delivered a lecture on “Kulothungan Kavithaikalil puthia aathisudi tharum alumai panbum penia sinthanaiyum” Thiru.T.K.Shanmuganandam, Chancellor, Avinashilingam University for Women, presided.
Rehabilitation Programme for Persons with Special Needs
Computer Application Programme for persons with special needs was organized in collaboration with the Department of Special Education. Main objective of this programme was to train the visually and hearing impaired individuals in computer application. This programme was started in the month of February 2006. The components in the training included
- Introduction to computer
- Key board operation
- Practice in accent in speech software for visually impaired (JAWS) Windows’98
- Microsoft Office 2000 (Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Internet
The participants included 10 Hearing impaired women and 10 visually impaired women. The visually impaired women who are working in college, school and Government sector purchased personal computer and use it regularly. Feed back from the trainees is being collected. Some of the hearing impaired trainees have joined as computer operator in NGO programme. The programme stretched up to three months. Two specially trained women conducted the training.
Diet Counselling Centre
In the modern world, technology development plays a key role in changing the living pattern of every individual. This change results in the adverse effect on the health scenario of the population. The prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus,Cardiovascular Diseases,Obesity, osteoporosis and other degenerative diseases are concern for the health professionals especially dietetians. Keeping this in mind a “ Diet Counselling Centre” is inaugurated by Dr. K. Kulandaivel, Chancellor, Avinashilingam University for Women in our University premises on 02.10. 2006 in collaboration with the Department of Food Service Management and Dietetics, wherein the awareness on diet related disorder was created among the University staff, students and the community. Since the women folk after the age of 40 are affected by bone disorders. Hence, bone mineral density test was carried out to assess the calcium status of 200 adult women in the University and the affected were counselled to practice exercise and include calcium in their diet. Medical checkups were conducted for more than 2000 subjects constituting school children, university students and staff to understand the health problems and health status. The problems like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, anaemia, tumor and dental disorders were observed by the medical screening team. Counselling aids like booklets, pamphlets, leaflets and charts are prepared for the continuous counselling programme for the needed subjects.
NODAL SERVICES IMPLEMENTATION
EDP Cell
Employment of women is an index of their economic status in the society, especially with reference to equality. Hence utilization of the available women power through a training programme and other assistance make them successful entrepreneurs and will have far reaching results by way of improving socio economic conditions. Self-employment constitutes the best means of supplementing the family income by producing saleable articles and creating self-reliance among the women. With this backdrop, our centre is focusing its attention towards imparting skills through entrepreneurship development for the women and students in our society. In collaboration with the Faculty of Community Education and Entrepreneurship Development an EDP Cell is inaugurated on 18.07.2006. Instructors with well trained entrepreneurial skills were employed to conduct the training programmes based on the interest and felt needs of the students and women in the community. Computer Literacy Programme
Computer Literacy Programme was initiated in Collaboration with Tulsi Rural Development Trust at Sennanoor village, Thenkarai Panchayat in Thondamuthur Block of Coimbatore District. It was by Dr. Neeraj Mittal, IAS, District Collector Coimbatore on 25.08.2006. Various employment oriented courses (Computer Fundamentals, Windows, MS-Office and DTP) are conducted in four batches every day with a duration of one and a half hours per batch and for 5 days a week. Special classes are organized for school students on every Saturday. Currently one hundred and two participants have enrolled themselves under this programme. Three full time staff with computer skill are appointed for this computer Literacy Programme at Sennanoor village. They would co-ordinate and plan the courses based on the felt needs of the students and women in the community.
Educational Awareness Especially for Women (Students, teachers and community)
Educational Awareness of Cancer in Women
Centre for Women's Studies in collaboration with the Department of Psychology organized an “Educational Awareness programme on Cancer in Woman” on 13.09.2006. Prof. Dr. S. Saras Chandra Bas, HOD and Chief, Division of Medical Oncology, G.K.N.M Hospital, Coimbatore gave a lead presentation on Risk Factors in Cancer. Psychological Counselling for Cancer was given by Mr. Vincent Sundararaj, Social worker, Ms. Kavitha and Ms. Anitha, Clinical Psychologists, Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, G.K.N.M. Hospital, Coimbatore.
Promotion of Entrepreneurship among Women for National Activities in Participation and Organizing Village Trade Kristi, National/ International fair

Maha mela (Exhibition cum sale of products by women entrepreneurs) was organized from 19.05.2006 to 20.05.2006 at Annapoorna Annex, Mettupalayam Road, Coimbatore. A total of 100 stalls (including edible item, readymade garments, handicrafts, artificial Jewellery etc) were put up by the women. Thiru. T.K. Shanmuganandam, Secretary, Asst. Managing Trustee, The Avinashilingam Education Trust, Coimbatore was inaugurated the mela. Through the feedback obtained from the women, it would be ascertained that they had incurred a profit of Rs. 1000 to 1500 per day.
